From June 1, 1968 to September 17, 1979, On Kawara traced his path each day in red ink on a photocopied map of the city he was in. He stamped each map with the date and kept the drawings in 3-ring binders. Eventually totalling 4740 pages, Kawara collectively titled these drawings I Went. I reenacted Kawara's project for the entire year of 2010 and subsequently for three months in 2015 as part of my Echoes project. I drew at least one map every day (two on the days when I traveled), and stored them in binders similar to the ones used by Kawara. You can view the entire set of I Went drawings from my Echoes project here - drawings from 2010 are pictured here, including maps from Paris, New York, Berlin, and Los Angeles (clockwise from top left).
I also produced a limited edition book featuring prints of 13 of the maps from 2010. Click here for more information.
