Saddam With Saladin and Soldiers

Acrylic on Canvas, 36 x 60", 2007

This painting shows Saddam Hussein on the right and Saladin on the left. Saddam frequently compared himself to Saladin, a muslim warrior who succesfully fought off Christian invaders during the crusades. In the background are Assyrian warriors -- ancient inhabitants of Iraq - and the Babylonian Ishtar gate at right. In the foreground are contemporary Iraqi soldiers and civilians, military vehicles, and ancient and modern dwellings. The soldier giving the peace symbol in the left foreground may indicate that this mural was painted to commemorate the end of the Iran Iraq war.
